Beta-2 Microglobulin
Explanation: Beta-2 microglobulin (B2M) is a protein found on the surface of many cells, especially white blood cells that support immune function. It helps the immune system recognize and respond to threats like infections. When cells break down or are renewed, B2M is released into the bloodstream. Since the kidneys filter B2M out of the blood, its levels can indicate how well the kidneys are functioning.
Test Purpose:
- Assess kidney function, as elevated B2M levels may indicate reduced kidney filtering capacity.
- Evaluate immune system activity, with increased B2M levels potentially signaling chronic inflammation.
