Fibrinogen Degradation Products
Explanation: Fibrinogen degradation products (FDPs) are protein fragments produced when the body breaks down blood clots. Normally, the body forms clots to stop bleeding and then dissolves them once healing occurs. However, In certain conditions, excessive clot formation and breakdown can occur, leading to elevated FDP levels in the blood. Measuring FDPs helps assess the balance between clot formation and dissolution in the body.
Test Purpose:
- Detect conditions like disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), where widespread clotting and bleeding occur simultaneously.
- Assist in diagnosing thrombotic disorders such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).
- Monitor the effectiveness of treatments aimed at dissolving clots, such as thrombolytic therapy.
- Evaluate unexplained bleeding or clotting issues by assessing the body's clot breakdown activity.
