3-Hydroxyglutaric acid
Explanation: 3-Hydroxyglutaric acid is a compound that forms during the breakdown of certain proteins in the body. Normal metabolism quickly processes this compound, so levels are typically very low in healthy individuals. In individuals with specific inherited metabolic disorders, such as glutaric acidemia type I (GA1) or glutaric acidemia type II (GA2), this compound can accumulate to harmful levels. Elevated concentrations of 3-hydroxyglutaric acid are associated with neurological symptoms and can contribute to metabolic acidosis.
Test Purpose:
- Detect glutaric acidemia type I, a rare inherited metabolic disorder
- Assist in detecting glutaric acidemia type II (GA2), another metabolic disorder affecting energy production.
