Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 activity

Explanation: Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is is an enzyme mostly attached to LDL cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol) in the blood. It’s like a troublemaker that stirs up inflammation in blood vessels by breaking down fats into harmful bits that can make artery walls sticky and prone to plaque buildup. When arteries get clogged with these fatty deposits, they’re at risk of bursting, which can lead to heart attacks or strokes. Measuring the activity of Lp-PLA2 provides insight into vascular inflammation and the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Test Purpose:

  • Assess the risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary heart disease and stroke, by measuring Lp-PLA2 activity levels.
  • Help identify people who may be at higher risk for heart problems, even if their cholesterol levels seem normal.
  • Provide additional information beyond traditional lipid profiles to guide clinical decision-making in cardiovascular risk assessment.
