Uroporphyrin III
Explanation: Uroporphyrin III is a type of porphyrin, a group of compounds involved in making heme, a vital part of hemoglobin that carries oxygen in the blood. Normally, very little uroporphyrin III is present in the body, but its levels can rise when there are problems in the heme production pathway, often due to inherited enzyme deficiencies.
Test purpose:
- Detect porphyria: High levels of uroporphyrin III in blood or urine may indicate certain types of porphyria, a group of genetic disorders that affect heme production. This test is often performed when someone has symptoms like abdominal pain, dark urine, skin sensitivity to sunlight, or nervous system problems.
- Assess liver or bone marrow function: Abnormal levels can also reflect broader issues with bile flow or liver function.
