Stigmasterol
Explanation: Stigmasterol is an unsaturated plant-based fat, known as a phytosterol, naturally found in various plant foods, including soybeans, nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils. In the human body, stigmasterol is absorbed from the diet and can influence cholesterol metabolism. While moderate intake through diet is considered beneficial for heart health, excessive accumulation may indicate a rare inherited condition called sitosterolemia, which affects fat metabolism.
Test Purpose: Detect sitosterolemia, a rare genetic disorder causing elevated levels of plant sterols like stigmasterol.
