Cholestanol

Cholestanol
Explanation: Cholestanol is produced from cholesterol as part of its metabolism. It's normally present in very small amounts in blood and tissues. When certain enzymes involved in cholesterol metabolism don't work properly due to genetic disorders, cholestanol can accumulate to high levels. This buildup can affect various organs, particularly the brain and nervous system, leading to progressive neurological problems.
Test Purpose:
- Detect cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis, a rare genetic disorder affecting cholesterol and bile acid metabolism.
- Evaluate patients with unexplained neurological symptoms.
