Campesterol
Explanation: Campesterol is an unsaturated plant-based fat. It is naturally found in various plant foods, including vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. In the human body, campesterol is absorbed from the diet and can influence cholesterol metabolism. While moderate intake through diet is considered beneficial for heart health, excessive accumulation may indicate a rare inherited condition called sitosterolemia, which affects fat metabolism.
Test Purpose:
- Detect sitosterolemia, a rare genetic disorder, causing elevated levels of campesterol.
- Evaluate unexplained high cholesterol levels or early-onset heart disease.
