Iron % Saturation
Explanation: Iron % Saturation (also known as transferrin saturation) measures the proportion of transferrin—a protein that transports iron in the blood—that is bound with iron. This value provides insight into how effectively the body is utilizing and transporting iron and provides more information about health issues like anemia that are affecting the body's iron supply.
Test Purpose:
- Assess iron levels in relation to the body’s capacity to bind and transport iron.
- Aid in detecting iron deficiency anemia (low saturation) or conditions of iron overload, such as hemochromatosis (high saturation).
- Complement other iron-related tests (e.g., iron, ferritin) to form a clearer picture of overall iron balance.
