Chloride
Explanation: Chloride is an essential electrolyte that helps maintain proper fluid balance, blood pressure, proper nerve and muscle function and acid-base balance in the body. It works closely with sodium and other electrolytes to regulate the amount of fluid inside and outside cells. Chloride is also a key component of stomach acid, which aids in digestion. Chloride is typically obtained through dietary salt (sodium chloride) and is excreted by the kidneys.
Test Purpose: The chloride blood test is used to evaluate the body's electrolyte balance and detect conditions that may affect kidneys, heart, or lungs. It is included with other markers to detect:
- Dehydration or overhydration
- Kidney disease or dysfunction
- Heart failure
- Liver disease
- High blood pressure
- Acid-base imbalances in the blood.
