Glutaric acid
Explanation: Glutaric acid is a natural compound produced during the breakdown of proteins in the diet. In healthy individuals, glutaric acid is further processed and eliminated from the body. However, when there are defects in this metabolic pathway, glutaric acid can accumulate to high levels in the blood and tissues (glutaric aciduria).
Test Purpose:
- Detect glutaric acidemia type I, a rare inherited metabolic disorder
- Assist in detecting glutaric acidemia type II (GA2), another metabolic disorder affecting energy production.
