2-Methylcitric acid
Explanation: 2-Methylcitric acid is a compound naturally produced in the body during normal metabolism. In healthy individuals, this process is well-regulated, but in people with specific inherited metabolic disorders, 2-methylcitric acid can accumulate to harmful levels. High levels can also indicate problems with mitochondrial function.
Test Purpose: Detect certain inherited metabolic disorders, especially propionic acidemia and methylmalonic acidemia; monitor treatment effectiveness in patients with known metabolic disorders.
