3-Methylglutaconic acid
Explanation: 3-Methylglutaconic acid is a compound that forms during the breakdown of proteins. In a healthy body, this substance is present in very small amounts. Disruptions in the protein breakdown process can cause levels of this compound to rise. Elevated levels are often associated with rare disorders that affect energy production in cells, particularly in the mitochondria (the cell's power plants). These disorders can affect multiple organs, especially those that need a lot of energy like the brain, muscles, and other organs.
Test Purpose:
- Detect disorders affecting amino acid metabolism known as 3-methylglutaconic acidurias
- Evaluate neurological problems, muscle weakness.
- Evaluate mitochondrial function.
