3-Methylglutarylcarnitine
Explanation: 3-Methylglutarylcarnitine is a compound naturally produced in the body during the breakdown of the amino acid leucine and ketone body formation during fasting. It plays a role in energy metabolism. Elevated levels can indicate disruptions in amino acid metabolism, often associated with fatty acid oxidation disorders and rare inherited disorders such as 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA lyase deficiency (HMG-CoA lyase deficiency), where the body cannot properly process leucine or make ketones during fasting. This condition can cause dangerous episodes of low blood sugar, metabolic acidosis, and potentially life-threatening complications.
Test Purpose: Detect fatty acid oxidation disorders and conditions such as 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA lyase deficiency.
