Decanoylcarnitine
Explanation: Decanoylcarnitine is a compound created when the body breaks down fatty acids for energy. It forms during normal fat metabolism as an intermediate step in the process where fats are converted to fuel. When fatty acid breakdown is disrupted, decanoylcarnitine can accumulate in the blood. Elevated levels indicate problems with fatty acid oxidation disorders, particularly medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (MCAD) deficiency.
Test Purpose: Screen for medium-chain fatty acid oxidation disorders, especially MCAD deficiency.
