Explanation: Hexenoylcarnitine is a compound formed during the breakdown of fatty acids for energy production. When fatty acid oxidation pathways are disrupted hexenoylcarnitine can accumulate in the blood. Elevated levels are associated with medium-chain fatty acid oxidation disorders, particularly medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency.

Test Purpose: Screen for medium-chain fatty acid oxidation disorders, such as MCAD deficiency.
