8-Dehydrocholesterol
Explanation: 8-Dehydrocholesterol (8-DHC) is a compound naturally produced in the body as an intermediate in cholesterol biosynthesis. Elevated levels of 8-dehydrocholesterol can indicate disruptions in cholesterol metabolism, most commonly associated with Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome, a genetic disorder affecting the final step of cholesterol biosynthesis.
Test Purpose: Detect Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome by detecting elevated levels of 8-DHC in the blood.
