Phytanic acid
Explanation: Phytanic acid is a fatty acid obtained from dietary sources like dairy products, animal fats, and certain fish. In healthy individuals, phytanic acid is broken down by the body. However, in disorders such as Refsum disease, this breakdown is impaired, leading to the accumulation of phytanic acid in the body. Elevated levels can cause neurological symptoms.
Test Purpose:
- Detect Refsum disease.
- Assess peroxisomal function.
- Differentiate between various metabolic disorders affecting fatty acid oxidation.
