Myristic Acid
Explanation: Myristic acid (tetradecanoic acid) is a saturated fatty acid found in various natural sources, including nutmeg (from which it gets its name, derived from the botanical name "Myristica fragrans"), palm kernel oil, coconut oil, and dairy products. It plays a role in cell membrane function, protein modification, and fat metabolism. While it contributes to energy storage, excessive intake may be linked to increased LDL cholesterol levels.
Test purpose: A myristic acid blood test helps assess:
- Lipid metabolism and heart health, since high levels may affect cholesterol and cardiovascular risk.
- Nutritional status, especially in individuals with high or low dietary fat intake.
