Androsterone
Explanation: Androsterone is a hormone made in the body as part of the process of breaking down testosterone and other male sex hormones (androgens). It is a weak androgen, only about one seventh as strong as testosterone. Androsterone is also found in small amounts in women, where it contributes to overall hormone balance.
Test purpose:
- Evaluate hormone balance: Abnormal androsterone levels can help identify issues with testosterone or other androgen production.
- Detect adrenal or gonadal conditions: Since androsterone is made, mainly in the liver, from hormones produced in the adrenal glands and testes (or ovaries in women), abnormal levels may indicate adrenal or gonadal dysfunction.
- Investigate symptoms of hormone imbalance: Such as excessive hair growth (hirsutism) in women.
