Coproporphyrin II
Explanation: Coproporphyrin II is one of the substances called porphyrins involved in production of heme, which is a key part of hemoglobin that helps carry oxygen in red blood cells. Elevated levels of coproporphyrin II often indicate a disruption in heme production or liver function.
Test purpose:
- Detect porphyria: Helps diagnose rare genetic conditions like porphyria, where problems in heme production cause porphyrin buildup, leading to symptoms such as abdominal pain, light sensitivity, or nervous system issues.
- Evaluate liver and bile function: High coproporphyrin II levels can signal liver disease or issues with bile flow.
