Histamine
Explanation: Histamine is a natural chemical that acts like a messenger. It plays a key role in immune response, helping to fight off infections and allergens. It is released by the body in response to allergens or infections like pollen or a bug bites. It causes blood vessels to widen and makes their walls more "leaky", thus lowering blood pressure. Histamine also helps with digestion and communicates with the brain to regulate sleep and wake cycles.
Test purpose: Testing histamine levels helps detect allergic reactions, histamine intolerance, and rare immune-related conditions.
- Detect allergic reactions: High histamine levels can indicate that the body is reacting to allergens, such as pollen, food, or insect stings. Symptoms like flushing, diarrhea, or low blood pressure may be linked to abnormal histamine activity.
- Identify histamine intolerance: Some people have trouble breaking down histamine from foods, leading to symptoms like headaches, flushing, or digestive issues.
- Evaluate mast cell conditions like mastocytosis or mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) cause excessive histamine release, leading to symptoms like rashes, low blood pressure, and breathing problems.
