Cortisone
Cortisone
Explanation: Cortisone is a largely inactive form of cortisol. The body makes cortisone from cortisol, particularly in the kidneys, and can convert it back into active cortisol in the liver and other tissues. Cortisol helps regulate inflammation, blood pressure, immune activity, metabolism and the body’s response to stress. Cortisone can also be used as a corticosteroid medication; after conversion into cortisol, it reduces inflammation and associated swelling and pain.
Test purpose:
- Testing cortisol and cortisone together can help explain a type of high blood pressure that comes with a low renin level. Normally, the body protects the kidneys by turning active cortisol into inactive cortisone. When this conversion does not work well, extra cortisol acts like the salt-retaining hormone aldosterone, raising blood pressure. This can be inherited, or it can come from substances that block the conversion, such as glycyrrhizin, a natural compound in real licorice.
