Explanation: 5-Hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid (5-HIAA) is the main breakdown product of serotonin, an important chemical messenger in the body that affects mood, digestion, and many other functions. Abnormally high levels may indicate certain rare tumors or conditions such as intestinal carcinoid and neuroendocrine tumors.
