Bilirubin-to-Albumin Ratio (BAR)
Explanation: The Bilirubin-to-Albumin Ratio (BAR) compares the level of bilirubin, a waste product made when red blood cells break down, to albumin, the main protein produced by the liver. Bilirubin builds up when the liver is stressed, inflamed, or unable to filter properly. Albumin drops when the liver can’t make enough protein or when the body is dealing with long-term inflammation or illness.
Test purpose: Evaluate severity of liver disease: The ratio helps identify progression from mild liver injury to more serious issues like hepatitis, cirrhosis, or bile duct obstruction, especially when other liver tests are borderline.
Note: Universal clinical reference ranges have not been established for this calculated marker. Available cutoffs vary by population and clinical context. This value should be interpreted alongside individual component values, clinical history, and other relevant biomarkers.
