Corrected Calcium
Explanation: Corrected calcium is a calculated value that estimates what a person’s blood calcium level would be if their albumin were normal. Because a large portion of calcium in the blood is bound to albumin, low albumin can falsely lower total calcium on lab tests even when physiologically active calcium is normal. Corrected calcium helps prevent misinterpretation by adjusting the total calcium level for low or abnormal albumin levels.
Test purpose:
- Avoid false alarms: Prevent unnecessary worry or treatment when calcium appears low only because protein is low.
- Guide treatment decisions: Help doctors decide whether calcium replacement therapy is actually needed.
- Screen for real calcium problems: Distinguish between true calcium disorders and lab results that just look abnormal due to protein changes.
- Identify hidden calcium excess: Detect high calcium that might be masked by low protein levels.
