Lipoprotein (a)
Explanation: Lipoprotein (a), or Lp(a), is a type of low-density lipoprotein (LDL, also known as bad cholesterol) that carries cholesterol in the blood. Lipoprotein (a) creates plaques in the blood vessels reducing blood flow through arteries. Its levels are primarily determined by genetics and are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks and strokes. Unlike other cholesterol markers, Lp(a) levels remain relatively stable over a lifetime and are not significantly affected by lifestyle changes.
Test Purpose:
- Assess inherited risk for cardiovascular diseases, including heart attack and stroke.
- Elevated Lipoprotein (a) often presents without symptoms, but in cases of extremely high levels, Lipoprotein (a) apheresis may be considered to lower its concentration in the blood.
